Each term, spring, summer, and fall, IBC looks for two to three bright, self-motivated students from around the country for our internship program. The internship is not rigidly structured, so we are looking for students who are able to work in a flexible environment with minimum supervision and have a clear idea of what they expect to accomplish before coming to Washington. Intern responsibilities vary, but include attending and summarizing congressional hearings and press conferences, providing research for counsellors and clients, composing articles for our trade publication, and monitoring political and trade developments in various regions and issues. Clerical work is minimal, though it may occasionally be required. IBC internships are unpaid and are open to undergraduate students. If you are interested in working with us, send a cover letter, resume, transcript, and short writing sample to Mary Fromyer by mail, fax or e-mail. We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2008.
Students from many top-tier schools across the country have participated in the IBC internship program, including:
“The office environment was excellent. Everyone was always welcoming and friendly, was more than willing to help out if I got stuck, and was eager to give me assignments and projects. I felt extremely trusted by everyone at IBC, which boosted my confidence in the work I was doing and which made the entire experience more worthwhile and fun. I would recommend IBC very highly to anyone looking for an internship in international politics or trade. I left feeling like I had made a real contribution to IBC, and that IBC had made a real contribution to me, both as a student and as a colleague.” ~ Michael Pollack, Swarthmore College “At IBC I was able to really be a part of the action, taking daily trips to Capitol Hill, attending luncheons at some of Washington's most prestigious social clubs, and working directly on client projects. My favorite duties consisted of compiling summaries of House and Senate hearings for the counsellors, and regularly attending hearings. My most memorable experience was attending Egypt's country day at the Egyptian embassy with IBC President Solveig Spielmann. The office environment was friendly and bipartisan. I learned how to navigate the Washington, D.C. area, how Senate and House hearings proceeded and how private entities interacted with the government.” ~ Thomas Whitehead, College of William & Mary "My experience with IBC was both challenging and rewarding. From day one, I found myself in a highly collegial and professional work environment. Although my assignments were often quite difficult, I could always call upon my associates for assistance and guidance. At IBC I learned a great deal about issues of growing relevance to the conduct of transnational business. I had the opportunity to attend and analyze a 9/11 commission hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives, visit the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, VA to conduct first-hand research for a major corporate client, and collaborate in the development of an IBC-sponsored business conference. As an IBC intern, I was given great responsibility and expected to uphold high standards of professional honesty and integrity.” ~ Thomas Baldwin, Brown University “The staff played an integral role in my internship as they were resourceful, extremely knowledgeable and made me feel part of the team. My internship laid the groundwork and was a stepping stone to a more professional role and, since then, I have taken an active position in assisting Manager of International Trade on issues affecting the company [Baxter Healthcare Corporation]. WIBC is definitely a great place to start if you are looking to be exposed into the international environment.” ~ Molly Njeru, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Baxter Healthcare Corporation
